Digital High School-The Future

By Ed Desmond

Education is advancing as is every part of society. Analog is being replaced by digital. Online high school is the future of secondary school.

This is a change that we are so immersed in that we may notice it. If you put a frog in a pot of water and heat the water slowly, the frog will not try to jump out until it is too late and the water is boiling. I don't think the digital changes are going to boil us, but we are quite surrounded by them.

In the typical classroom, an instructor lectures a hall packed with students. While this may be profitable for a private school, it is very inefficient. In public schools, this a costly, and increasingly old fashioned method of learning. Enter virtual schools. In the, not so distant future, traditional brick and mortar schools will be pushed aside by digital education.

A radical paradigm shift occurs when an old business plan becomes obsolete, and cannot adapt to new conditions. The music and film industries are good examples. Licensing and copyright laws have protected creative "ownership" of materials. Now the switch to digital has allowed easy copying, and hacking of DRM locks.

Photography is well along in its conversion to digital. Today cheap cameras are abundant, photos can be hot linked from the net, and original images are long forgotten after dozens of software edits.

Many of us clearly recall bulky film cameras with a maximum of 36 shots, and waiting days for processing. Today fancy little digital cameras are everywhere. Professional digital camera are producing eye popping images with much less effort and expertise required.

Digital books, and newspapers are finding an increasing market. I own a portable ebook reader. It is small, light, and can be loaded with 1,500 books. I love that thing. I read a lot, and have loaded a library of free books into the device. I have also bought a few books, and paid a discounted price for them. I can also get popular newspapers, and magazines for it. I still like paper books for their feel, and durability, but more and more I am reading in digital format. It is on a 3G network at no extra fee and can fetch an ebook in 30 seconds wherever I am in the U.S.. It is more convenient than books.

I am old enough to have some nostalgia for old ways of doing things. It is just nostalgia, however. The most efficient method wins in my book.

Many will cling to traditional schools for their personal touch, and socialization. New means of personal contact, mentoring, and social interaction are already emerging, however.

The evidence is all around us. There must be a better use for those huge old school buildings. We need our best mentors teaching online, and a slick new education paradigm. - 29891
